Reading and Journaling by August 30

We are starting the novel “Cry, The Beloved Country” this week. The goal is to finish this in two weeks (by September 6). It will be important to keep up the reading schedule so you can finish in two weeks. Make notes of how many journeys you see in the story, how you would define these journeys and any other details that seem important along the way. We will talk about it some next week. We’re also going to start thinking about our own stories in light of these journey themes.
Also, try to come up with a list of five movies that explore the theme of refugees. These could be American or Foreign.
Try to write a little essay by September 6 on one of the stories we’ve read so far or on “Cry, the Beloved Country.”

Reading for September 6

Finish “Cry the Beloved Country” this week. Instead of reading “To Sir with Love” next, let’s jump ahead to “Travels with Charley.”

Writing for September 6

Try to turn in the first essay on journey stories. Send me a 5 to 6 paragraph essay on what you’ve noticed thus far on journey tales. You can draw examples from books we’ve read or from film or anything other places.

Reading for September 13

Start reading “Travels with Charley in Search of America” by John Steinbeck. You can read this book over the next three weeks. For the next two weeks, Mr. Ash Bramblett will be substituting for me. Most of you met him today, and I think you’ll have a good discussion. Once again, be sure to keep good notes in those discussions.

Journey Films
I’m starting a list of journey films. Try to add any films you can think of and hit reply. We’ll build and later try to categories types of journey films.
