    Fishsticks? http://www.douglasfloyd.com/archives/905 http://www.douglasfloyd.com/archives/905#comments Fri, 23 Jan 2009 05:24:46 +0000 admin http://dougfloyd.wordpress.com/?p=905 800px-fishfinger1

I was thinking about fishsticks tonight.

In case you’re wondering, Wikipedia says,

Fish sticks, also commonly referred to as fish fingers, are a processed food made using a whitefish such as cod which have been battered and/or breaded. They are commonly available in the frozen food section of supermarkets, and on children’s menus in family-oriented restaurants.

Varieties include different types of fish, such as pollock, haddock or sole; flavoring in the breading, such as peppercorn, garlic or lemon; and special shapes that appeal to children and fish stick enthusiasts alike. Premium fish fingers are also available, made from cuts of fish fillet instead of reconstituted fish.

Prominent brands in the U.S. include Gorton’s of Gloucester and Van de Kamp’s. Birds Eye is a prominent brand in the United Kingdom which claims to have produced the first fish fingers.

Fish fingers are popular with children and their parents as an easy-to-prepare finger food that is somewhat healthy for kids, as fish contains many nutrients including Omega-3, and small amounts of fried foods are not incompatible with an over-all healthy diet.

Fish fingers are often eaten with Tartar sauce or Ketchup

    Yum!

Political Science instead of MBA http://www.douglasfloyd.com/archives/745 http://www.douglasfloyd.com/archives/745#comments Wed, 17 Dec 2008 21:28:50 +0000 admin http://dougfloyd.wordpress.com/2008/12/17/political-science-instead-of-mba/ I wonder if a “political science” degree might be more helpful than some of the MBAs I’ve encountered. I know some MBA programs connect and support Drucker’s original vision of how business play an integrating role of social stability. But many MBAs seem to be nothing more than glorified Excel degrees.

Political science is the study of the art and science of the body politic. I think many businesses function much like a body politic. They deal with issues of governance, war (internal and external), human relations, social stability, and so on. Plus, their decisions often have ramifications that reach far beyond the business.

If you think about businesses, you might also see that some are run more like a democracy (some like a rambunctious Athenian democracy), some are totalitarian tyrannies, some some are republics and so on.

I wonder if have some sernior executive with a political science background might helpful bring a helpful accentuation into the managing and visioning process.
